The Second Battle of El Alamein was a decisive battle on the North African battlefield of the Second World War. It took place between 23 October and 4 November 1942, mainly between British Commonwealth forces and German-Italian troops of the Axis powers.
After the Allied Powers painfully halted Rommel's advancing troops towards Cairo in the First Battle of El-Alamein, the front line was consolidated at El-Alamein, 106 km from Alexandria. After the arrival of significant reinforcements, under the leadership of General Montgomery, the allies attacked and broke through the front line of the German-Italian troops in several phases and routed them, causing significant losses. The remnants of the Afrika Korps retreated almost to Tunisia.
The suffered defeat sealed the fate of the Axis powers in North Africa, henceforth they were only able to engage in offensive warfare to a limited extent. The battle was the first successful large-scale Allied operation of the war. Its energizing effect on the Allies, fed up with a series of defeats, perhaps even surpassed the strategic importance of the battle. In the words of Churchill: "This is not the end, not even the beginning of the end, but rather the end of the beginning".
