In the shadow of an environmental disaster

A time bomb off the coast of Yemen!

A supertanker carrying more than one million barrels of oil anchored off the coast of Yemen "is likely to sink or explode at any moment," causing an environmental and humanitarian disaster at sea, a UN official said. The FSO Safer was completely abandoned in 2015 due to the outbreak of civil war in Yemen and the ship is now falling apart. David Gressly, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, said: “We do not want the Red Sea to become a Black Sea. During this long time, no one has tried to launch or tow the ship. The current Yemeni government has not yet announced plans to remove the ship. It's an old ship, dating back to the 1976 super tanker era, and therefore not only old, but unmaintained and dangerous. It is very lucky that so far the storms have not caused any serious damage to the tanker. As time passes, more and more bugs appear on the ship. Will the world unite against the disaster?
